Surprise!

Okay, so I know you’re probably thinking “Oh my god, she’s.... wait what?,” or “I didn’t think she was the type of person to do it,” or possibly, “Who’s the daddy?” Even though the title of this blog hints that I have developed experience as a mother, it’s not the early stages of motherhood(i.e. going through pregnancy, taking care of babies, making sure she has enough diapers or change of clothes), but rather the stage when a mother who needs to drive the kids everywhere and do what 10-15 year olds want to do. So let me tell you where this all starts.

One morning in the beginning of August, I woke up to find out that my dad reserved some tickets to go out of the country. He had been recently telling me about how he wanted us both, and my mom, to go to Turkey for vacation. School was going to start on the 20th so I still had some time left to travel. When I mustered up the courage to ask my dad about his plans he said he would discuss it later.

I began fantasizing about this trip until I learned that he bought only two tickets. Demanding a reason from my parents, my dad said “Well you see, your mom just finished teaching her summer classes and has a month left until school starts. She deserves the vacation but she can't go by herself because, then how would it be fun to go by herself? But you see the thing is we need you to stay home to take care of our kids (i.e., your siblings) until we come back. I hope you won't mind doing that for us, would you?”

Well, here’s the rest of my summer gaining experience as a mom!!

  1. Your blog title drew me right in, and I was pretty scared for a second! I love that your first blog entry is brief but tells a lot about yourself. I can totally identify with your situation since I have to baby-sit my little brother all the time, but I can't even imagine what it would be like to take care of him for that long. I'm excited to see your next entry!

  2. This is a great premise for a blog, Mariam. Like Isabelle, I am definitely looking forward to hearing more. I think your title is well chosen, too. Now that you've written the first post, I might add a subtitle that sums up – in a concise and perhaps humorous way – the situation, so that new readers won't have to scroll down to your first post to understand what's going on. (Something along the lines of "They not my kids, but for these [x number of] weeks they're my problem," or whatever you think best pithily describes your situation and attitude.) Great idea! I can't wait to hear more.

  3. You did a really good job of creating an interesting blog title! I have to admit, your blog was the first one I clicked on in the class blog list. I also loved that you introduced your blog and yourself through a story. Like Isabelle and Ms. Majerus, I can't wait to read more about your adventures.

P.S. The photo at the end was a nice touch.

  5. haha you really got me with the blog title! This is such a great blog topic. Like Izzy, I can kind of relate to this because I babysit my brother all the time too, but I can't even imagine what it would be like to babysit more than one of him for that long. I really look forward to reading about how your summer went -- please give us some babysitting tips!
